Transport
Public Transport : In common with many Devon villages, Kingston is poorly served for transport. It has one 'bus, once a week on Fridays, leaving the village at around 10.00 a.m. for Plymouth and arriving back around 2.30pm. See Tally Ho Coaches, click on Timetables and look for Route 875. Free 'bus passes are available for all pensioners from the Tourist Information office in Modbury.
Trains from Totnes, Plymouth, Exeter and Newton Abbot are frequent. There is a limited service from Ivybridge, our nearest station - Timetable Here. Other timetables from National Rail.
Fare Car: We do, however, still have Fare Car, a shared taxi-style public transport service. Passengers book and pay separately as they would normally for a taxi, but share the advertised timetabled journeys. The fare charged is approximately equal to or slightly above the normal bus fare for the distance travelled. Fare Car is not a subsidised individual taxi service for people to use whenever and wherever they wish.
Fare Car is operated by local taxi operators by formal agreement with Devon County Council. In the Kingston, Bigbury, Modbury and Lee Mills area it is operated by Ivy Cabs Tel: 01752 895555
Fare Car is available to passengers of all ages, regardless of whether or not they live in the area. Fares are subsidised by Devon County Council and there are no further reductions for pensioners or children except those under 5 who travel free.
To use Fare Car you need to book in advance, normally the day before at the latest. Tel: 01752 895658 between 8am and 5pm daily.
There are eleven Fare Car schemes in selected areas of Devon. To find out where your nearest scheme is, or to obtain contact details, please select Fare Car Schemes in Devon. Kingston is in Fare Car scheme 7, F7, and in F17.
Fare Car Scheme 7 offers a much reduced servcie from April 1 2011, due to the savings Devon County Council has had to make this year. It now runs as follows:
To Modbury:Tuesdays, arrival 0920, departure 1230; Saturdays, arrival 1135, departure 1740.
To Ivybridge: Saturdays only arrival 1205, departure 1710.
Further cuts may be necessary next year so USE IT OR LOSE IT!
Fare Car Scheme 17 is still running. Every Wednesday a new accessible Fare Car service, F17, runs from Kingston, Bigbury, St Ann's Chapel, Challaborough, Ringmore, Aveton Gifford, and Loddiswell to Kingsbridge. This service is wheelchair accessible. Passengers can travel in an ordinary car seat or in a wheelchair. The drivers are trained to use mobility equipment and are happy to assist passengers in getting into and out of the vehicle. Journeys are scheduled to arrive in Kingsbridge at 10.30 and 11.30 at the Bus Station and the top of Fore St. and leave at 12.30 and 13.30. Pick up and drop off points are: the top of Fore St.; the bus station and the hospital.
All passengers will be charged £2.80, a Devon County Council subsidised fare, per single journey. No further reductions are available and anyone can use the service.
Leaflets are available to download as above or in the Tuesday Morning Market in Kingston. Large print versions can be sent to you directly, Tel: 01392 382800.
Cycling: Cycling is fun, but hilly, through our quiet lanes and byeways. There are long distance cycle routes throughout the area.
Airports: Both Exeter and Plymouth airports are within an hour's drive and, if you can bear the environmental impact, make short work of the journeys to UK cities and the rest of Europe.
Walking: There are several great walks within the parish boundaries and good access to the South West Coastal Path. Please see under the 'Walking in Kingston' tab for more information and downloadable maps. Maps are available from the Dolphin inn and the Church. There is also a useful orientation board on the Reading Room wall opposite the church, showing a lot of information about points of interest in the parish.
